What does this training explores?

This 3-hour interactive training explores the unique challenges and opportunities in providing clinical and case management services to mandated clients. Participants will examine the dynamics of coercion and motivation, learn engagement strategies that foster client autonomy, and explore ethical dilemmas commonly encountered when balancing legal mandates with professional values. Through case examples, discussion, and skill practice, participants will develop culturally responsive approaches to enhance therapeutic alliance and treatment outcomes in mandated care settings.

Upon the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the core characteristics and challenges of mandated clients within various systems (e.g., criminal justice, child welfare, mental health).
  • Apply engagement and motivational techniques (e.g., Motivational Interviewing, trauma-informed approaches) to build rapport with resistant or ambivalent clients.
  • Analyze ethical dilemmas related to confidentiality, informed consent, and dual obligations in mandated treatment.
  • Integrate culturally responsive and strengths-based interventions to promote client accountability and self-efficacy.
  • Develop collaborative treatment and documentation strategies that satisfy both client-centered and court-ordered requirements.

University of Maryland School of Social Work Office of Continuing Professional Education
